The Problem
Caring for newborns, particularly for first-time parents, poses significant challenges. Advice from experienced parents and books can be helpful, but it often falls short in addressing practical issues.
A major difficulty lies in interpreting the meaning behind an infant's cries, as this is their primary means of communication.
What We Found

of infants experience prolonged excessive crying during their first four months.

of pediatric consultations during an infant's first three months are due to excessive crying.

How might we help parents understand their baby's cries more confidently and respond with the right care?
Goals
Reduce guesswork during caregiving.
Improve parents' understanding of baby cries.
Increase parents' confidence in responding to their baby's needs.
Solution
Cry, Baby!
This application sets out to bridge the communication barrier parents or caretakers may experience with their newborns. The app acts as a baby translator, capturing baby cries and classifying them into moods and needs.
Cry Logs
The app can help users track their baby's moods thoughout the day. When the baby is crying, users simply need to press the listen button below to start recording the cry.
Listening and Analyzing
I've designed the listening state to be responsive to the sound the baby makes. The colors are also meant to be light and easy to help ease the user's frustrations.
I figured it might take a moment for a machine learning algorithm to classify a cry, so i designed an analyzing state as well. The shapes and colors are meant to convey a mood gradually taking it's form.
Results
I wanted the result screen to be simple but effective. It needs to convey the information the caretaker needs without being too much.
An app that understands
Different situations call for different solutions, and an app that understands that would be very helpful to caretakers.
The app should be able to tailer its recommendations based on what the baby needs at the spur of the moment. These tips should be taken from trusted sources.
Listening to feedback
The concept of the app was generally well received. I've shared the prototype with a few different users, particulary people with a background in caring for newborns, and they had some ideas to share.

At times where the app might not actually understand what the baby's cry means, it's always helpful to give the user any information that can be helpful for the situation.
Got your hands full?
Having a wake-word functionality where your phone listens for a baby's cry in the background helps caretakers catch infant cries much faster.
This can help them tend to the infant's need quicker.
Conclusion
By turning cries into meaningful insights, Cry, Baby! aims to make caring for newborns a little less overwhelming and a lot more reassuring.
I definitely had a lot of fun making this app concept, and I know there's still a lot of areas to eplore that can lead to an even better user experience for caretakers.
